How I prepare my hair for a long haul flight

I have recently arrived in Mexico City and I am super excited to be here. It is not a place that I had ever really thought to travel to, however business has brought me here and I cannot wait to explore this incredible city. It was a very long flight, 11 hours to be precise, so I decided to spend my time wisely. I had a huge Netflix binge, finished season 1 and started season 2 of Designated Survivor, which I definitely recommend by the way, and blogged. What better way to spend my time?

So on the blogging front, one thing I used to notice when I travelled, was how quickly my hair seemed to dirty, it would become greasy literally throughout the duration of a flight, maybe it is the continuous recycled air? Either way, when I arrive at my destination I want to at least try to feel fresh, so here are a few steps I now follow to prepare and tame the mane for a long haul flight.

Step 1.

I always wash my hair the night before a flight. I clean as usual, however only add a small amount of conditioner to the ends of my hair, rather than the usual plethora I have been known to recommend. Conditioner is great for softening and nourishing your hair, however too much will cause grease, so if you want your hair to look cleaner for longer, reduce the amount of conditioner in that wash and avoid the roots.

Step 2.

After its pre-flight wash, I apply a calming hair oil which reduces frizz and I allow my hair to dry naturally, which in turn leaves me with many, many hours to pack. Allowing my hair to dry naturally also causes less static, so it isn’t as wild the following morning.

Step 3.

Finally, I style my hair the morning of my flight. I brush through and style as normal, adding a little hairspray to each section as I go. Not too much, just enough that it gives my hair the hold that it needs. I give it another spray all over once I am finished and that usually does the trick. I always use an extra strong hold hairspray that gives the necessary grip without feeling sticky.

I also try not to play around with my hair too much during a flight, again this will just cause more grease. Leave it be and just give it one little brush through in the loo’s before you disembark.

I am now three days into my trip, my hair is still clean and I haven’t restyled it once since I arrived, so happy to say the steps above have worked for me! Give it a go next time you fly and let me know if it works for you.

Thank you so much Jenni! We are very lucky, but it can be hard work to look after can’t it? I style my hair once after a wash, I then do not restyle my hair until its next wash, that way you get more of a natural look as the days go on. I just tidy any little curly bits or my fringe day to day with straighteners. I hope that helps but I will definitely share a more detailed post around this soon! x
